LI: To learn about New Zealand history.
For this assignment we were given a task to explain what happened at our place we landed in. Using a website called somethinghappenedhere.co.nz. Our word we chose was empire. Empire means a very large group of people or a monarch led by one important person. We were given 6 tasks to do. Our tasks was to introduce who Jack Lovelock is, who was Adolf Hitler at the time, and what happened at the 1936 Olympics.
Jack Lovelock was a New Zealand Track athlete who competed in the 1936 Berlin summer Olympics. He won NZ 1 gold medal and received an Oak sapling from the Nazi. The oak sapling can be viewed in Timaru High School.
In 1936, the Olympics were held in Berlin Germany by Adolf Hitler. During the Olympics Jesse Owens who represented the USA, won four gold medals and shocked Hitler. When Owens won his first gold medal in the 100m track, Hitler refused to shake hands with the African/American because he was a negro. Hitlers words were spreaded all across the Berlin Newspaper Headlines. This made Hitler reveal who he truly was and there were a balance of hatred and worship towards him.
I found this activity interesting because we learnt about what happened at this place we chose and found different facts about each person.
